Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (Rafi Marg, New Delhi, IN) obtained a US patent where the invention relates to a novel safe and eco-friendly health protective and beauty enhancing herbal compositions having various cosmetic applications such as lipsticks, eye shadows, glow-glitters and rouges, said compositions containing colorants from plants of the family Boraginaceae, the invention also provides a method for preparing the said compositions. The invention also relates the use of lipsticks as a medium of aromatherapy.
7,005,298 Micropropagation and production of phytopharmaceutical plants
University of Guelph (CA) obtained a US patent  where the invention relates to the development of an in vitro regeneration system that utilizes a plant growth regulator having cytokinin activity for the induction of de novo shoots or somatic embryos on explants of phytopharmaceutical plants is provided. Out of several phytopharmaceutical plants, is one of these.  The method and its modifications are intended for application to all phytopharmaceutical plants including Jatropha curcas , St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum cv. Anthos), Huang-qin (Scutellaria baicalensis), Echinacea sp., Feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium), garlic (Allium sp.) and the like.
6,852,907 Resistance in plants to infection by ssDNA virus using inoviridae virus ssDNA-binding protein, compositions and methods of use
The Scripps Research Institute (La Jolla, CA) obtained a US patent  where the invention describes methods for producing plant resistance to a single stranded (ss)DNA virus, particularly a geminivirus such as mastrevirus, curtovirus or begomovirus. The method comprises introducing a ssDNA-binding protein of the Inoviridae virus into the plant, and includes a phage coat protein, particularly, a coliphage gene 5 protein. The invention also describes a transgenic plant comprising a gene that expresses the ssDNA-binding protein and vectors for expressing the protein in plants. The expression vector was present in a virus particle that infects preferred Begomovirus genus species including Jatropha curcas and expresses said ssDNA-binding coat protein.

Peplin Research Pty Ltd (Fortitude Valley, AT) obtained a US patents  where the  invention relates to a compound or group of compounds present in an active principle derived from plants of species Euphorbia peplus, Euphorbia hirta and Euphorbia drummondii, and to pharmaceutical compositions comprising these compounds. Extracts from these plants have been found to show selective cytotoxicity against several different cancer cell lines. The compounds are useful in effective treatment of cancers, particularly malignant melanomas and squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs). The compound were selected from the group consisting of jatrophanes, pepluanes, paralianes and ingenanes, and pharmaceutically-acceptable salts or esters thereof, and more particularly jatrophanes of Conformation II.

University of Copenhagen (Copenhagen, DK) obtained a US patent where the  invention relates to the field of plant propagation and more specifically to the mass propagation of plants with plant parasites, preferably of plants with green plant parasites, so called hemi-parasites. Accordingly there is provided a method for preparation of a plant comprising in successive order establishing at least one plant parasite on at least one branch of a host plant, cutting at least one branch of several ornamental species including Jatropha species with at least one established plant parasite, and rooting the at least one cut branch. These compounds were reported to have anti cancer compounds.

(Armocas, CA) obtained a US patent where the invention relates to methods of extracting and purifying bioactive substances from various plants and herbs including that from Jatropha . More specifically the invention relates to methods of extracting and separating bioactive substances from various plants and herbs using supercritical fluid extraction and/or fluorocarbon solvent extract. The present invention further relates to separation of bioactive substances contained in extracts using packed column supercritical fluid chromatography or HPLC where dense gas with or without modifiers is the mobile phase. The present invention also relates to pharmaceutical preparations and dietary supplements which may be prepared with the extracted bioactive substances and use of such pharmaceutical preparations and dietary supplements to treat various human ailments.

The Regents of the University of California (Oakland, CA) obtained a US patent where the provides methods for the treatment of cancers induced by clonal macrophage expansion and proliferation of surrounding tissue  due to toxins such as those from plant species such as Jatropha curcas  Croton, Tiglium, Momordica charantia, Saponaria officinalis etc.  The invention provides methods and kits for diagnosis of HIV- and non-HIV-associated clonal expansion of macrophages in pre-cancerous and cancerous tissue.
6,520,950 Method of electroporation-enhanced delivery of active agents
Genetronics, Inc. (San Diego, CA) obtained a US patent where the  inventors disclosed a methods for introducing a biologically active agent into cells of a subject by injecting the agent with a needle-free injector and applying a pulsed electric field to the region of tissue to cause electrotransport of the agent into cells of the tissue. Polynucleotides introduced into cells using this method can be used to accomplish gene therapy or to modulate expression of an endogenous gene.The toxins may be from plants like as Jatropha curcas  Croton, Tiglium, Momordica charantia etc.

The invention also provides methods for the treatment of cancers induced by clonal macrophage expansion and proliferation of surrounding tissue. The cytotoxic or proliferation-modulating agents and toxic agents which may be derived from microorganism or plant sources. Examples include the toxic subunits of naturally occurring toxins such as ricin, abrin, diphtheria toxin, saporin, and the like. Proteins from the following other plants have also been shown to possess ribosome inactivating activity: Stellarea holostea, Lychnis flos-cuculi, Hordeum murinum, Aegylops geniculata, Euphorbia serrata, Capsella bursa-pastoris, Muscari comosum (see Merino et al. (1990), J. Exp Botany, 41: 67-70); and proteins from Croton tiglium and Jatropha curcas (see Stirpe et al. (1976), Biochem J., 156: 1-6). Proteins from Jatropha curcas were quoted as a reference.

Battelle-Institut e.V. (Frankfurt am Main, DE)  obtained US patent wherein the invention relates to a process of producing symmetrically structured difatty acid diamines by reacting mixtures of fatty acids or their esters with diamines, isolating the symmetrical difatty acid diamides from the reaction mixture by making use of their different solubilities and concentrating them by recrystallisation if necessary. The invention also provides for a process of isolating a fatty acid from a mixture of fatty acids wherein the difatty acid diamides produced in the process of the invention are saponified to yield the corresponding free fatty acid. The method as included euphorbia oil, high-oleic and high-linoleic sunflower oil, castor oil or hydrogenated castor oil, olive oil, linseed oil, rapeseed oil, the oil of Jatropha curcas or the oil of marine animals is used as the source of fatty acids or fatty acid esters in the reaction mixture.

(Frankfurt, DE)  obtained US patent where the invention relates to plastics that can be obtained by reacting unsaturated and/or hydroxyl-group-containing fatty acids or their esters or mixtures of various such fatty acids and esters with bifunctional ester-forming and/or amide-forming compounds and, if necessary, subsequently converting ethylenic double bonds, to give difatty acid diamides, difatty acid diesters, difatty acid amide esters, monofatty acid amide amines or monofatty acid amide alcohols as monomer components which contain at least two reactive groups suited for linkage to give polymers, in particular ethylenic double bonds, hydroxyl groups, epoxy groups or amino groups, and by linking the said compounds in the known way via a second group of bifunctional compounds that are capable of reacting with these free reactive groups to give the desired plastics. The said fatty acids or esters comprise euphorbia oil, olive oil, linseed oil, castor oil or hydrogenated castor oil, sunflower oil, rapeseed oil, oil of Jatropha curcas, or oil from seeds of Euphorbia lathyris.

Alcan International Limited (Montreal, CA) obtained a US patent where a process for biodegrading under highly alkaline conditions organics in a waste stream being typical of oxalate waste streams resulting from alkaline treatment of bauxite. The microorganism used in this invention, which is particularly suited to degrading oxalates in a variety of industrial wastes to provide thereby an oxalate-reduced or oxalate-free waste stream was discovered from soils surrounding oxalate producing plants. It is thought that this microorganism exists in soils surrounding any form of oxalate producing plant, such as Dieffenbachia picta (Dieffenbachia), Jatropha padogrica; Monstera ssp: Philodendron spp; Rheum rhaponticum (Rhubarb).

Korea Green Cross Corporation (Kyongki, KR)  obtained a US patent where  an extract is derived from a mixture of the bark of the genus Phellodendron and the defatted seed of the genus Croton and has excellent therapeutic activity in treating various disorders of the immune system. Jatropha was only referred as a species of genus Croton.

5,055,291 4,871,350  Compositions for preventing secondary cataracts and Methods and compositions for preventing secondary cataracts
Baylor College of Medicine (Houston, TX)  obtained a US patent where  a novel methods and compositions are provided for preventing secondary cataracts. A cytotoxic agent is employed which is introduced into the anterior chamber of the eye to inhibit proliferation of remnant lens epithelial cells after extracapsular cataract extraction. The agents can be provided as kits. The toxic agents could be from diphtheria toxin A-chains, enzymically active proteolytic fragments from Pseudomonas aeruginosa exotoxin-A, ricin toxin A-chain, abrin A-chain, modeccin A-chain, and proteins found in various plants having similar activity, such as the plants e.g., Gelonium multiflorum, Phytolacca americana, Croton tiglium, Jatropha curcas, Momordica charantia, and wheat germ. Of particular interest is the toxin saporin from Saponaria officinalis.

4,659,663  Methods for isolating cell fusion products
Board of Regents, University of Texas System (Austin, TX)  obtained US patent  where a method for isolating the fusion product of two cell populations is disclosed. The method involves the introduction of a specific antitoxin into cells of one population while introducing a second specific antitoxin into cells of the second population. After fusing cells of the first population with those of the second population, the fusion product may be selectively isolated on a medium containing an appropriate amount of both first and second toxins. For some applications, it may be appropriate to introduce an antitoxin into only one of the cell populations and isolate the fusion product on a media containing only one toxin.  The plant toxins could be Ricinus communis toxin (ricin),  Abrus precatorius toxin (abrin),  Adenia digitata (modeccin),  Phytolacca americana toxin,  Wheat germ toxin,  Croton tiglium toxin Jatropha curcas toxin,  Momordica charantia toxin, Gelonium multiflorum toxin,  Dianthus carophyllus toxin,  Viscum album toxin alpha,  aflatoxin and various algal toxins (Ulva pertusa and M. lyngbyaccus).

The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of (Washington, DC)  obtained US patent  where the accumulation of hydrocarbons in plants which produce the same is enhanced by applying to the plants certain (3,4,5-substituted-phenoxy)-trialkylamines. The hydrocarbon producing plants included  uayule (Parthenium argentatum Gray), Hevea (Hevea brasiliensis, Muell.), Euphorbia tirucalli, Tararacum kok-saghyz Rodin, Euphorbia dendroides, and the like. The method of the invention is useful in increasing the accumulation of hydrocarbons in other plants, such as Euphorbia lathyrus, Euphorbia marlothii, Asclepias cursavica, Cryptostegia grandiflora, Eucalyptus glubulus, Jatropha curcas, Monadenium rhizophorum, Sarcostemma viminale, Synadenium grantii, Achcas sapota, Asclepias sp., Euphorbia coerulescens, Euphorbia trigona, and so forth.

(Thessaloniki, GR)  obtained US patent  where  the invention provides a composition suitable for external application against skin injuries and diseases, such as ulcera, [e.g., Ulcus Cruris (indolent leg ulcer)], burns, scalds, open skin wounds, and the like, and having as its active ingredient a compound. The compounds are preferably applied in admixture with a carrier, particularly in the form of a lipophil ointment, which, in addition to triglycerides, such as olive oil, also contains a wax, e.g., beeswax, and/or a vegetable gum, e.g., mastix. The invention also contemplates the extraction of the active compounds from the plants. Plants containing shikonnin included  Lithospermium erythrorhizon,  effective for light cases of Acne vulgaris and eczema;  and Jatropha glandulifera, which is used in popular medicine as a lenitive for rheumatic pain.
